Period Furniture

I’m a particular fan of Queen Anne furniture. For me, the designs are elegant and curving, embellished with carvings but not excessively ornate.

The work of the best 18th-century craftsmen is an inspiring mix of both technical ability and artistry. And it was all done with what we would consider today very primitive tools. (Though they did have access to some amazing wood!)

Today, modern machines can do much of the work. But at the end of the day, only handplanes, spokeshaves, rasps, scrapers and carving chisels will produce some of the fine details on a cabriole leg or a curved chair back. At times it feels more like sculpting than woodworking. And that’s part of the attraction.

Styles of furniture come and go. But Period Furniture is truly timeless.
